I tried to hook up an additional monitor to my Dell laptop, but all I could get was the background image from?

....the desktop. I tried the troubleshooter and followed the instructions, but nothing helped. We tried two other monitors just to make sure, same result. What am I missing here?

Answer:
Try different display modes like Clone/vertical Stretched etc and see if it helps If your using a Nvidia Card set it up through Nvidia Control Panel.
