Is it better to have a mac or sony laptop?

Which laptop choice would be better for college, Sony or Mac book?

  • I am currently a senior in high school, about to head off for college and in desperate need for some laptop advice. I kind of like HPs, but more into Sonys and Macbooks, but I don't know which one works better. I want something small and portable, light, long battery life, and lots of memory space. Good for pictures, music, good for documents, and everything a college student would need for school. Something I can use for years and can trust will last. I know it's alot to ask for, and might be a little too specific, but it doesn't hurt to ask! I've read that Sonys and Macbooks are top on the shelf but I really wouldn't know. Lots of tips and suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks!

I agree with the guy that said it depends on your software requirements. Some schools require students to have certain software packages installed that aren't necessarily available for Mac. Those people who are just like "GET A MAC!" are just fanboys. You need to compare what you're going to need it for. Definitely if you're going to play games on it, you need Windows, either by running boot camp or buying a windows machine. That being said, here's the cnet reviews of laptops. I find they are very reliable: http://reviews.cnet.com/4370-3121_7-214-101.html?tag=dir Both the Macbook and TZ150N are great ultraportables (light, long battery life, though with reduced processor speeds and smaller screens than midsize laptops [14-15" range]). Definitely check the school requirements, and if they offer support for both Mac or PC, you should do some more personal research. If your friend has a Mac, borrow his for a day, or go into an Apple store and play around with them. You're obviously familiar with Windows, so you've already test driven that. I'd caution you away from the Macbook Air though. The battery life is not what is promised, and you can't replace the battery with a spare. Also, if you are considering buy a Mac and running the application called "Boot Camp" to run WIndows XP <recommended over Vista>, then remember that the OS will tack on an additional $100-200 to your purchase price, depending on whether you got XP Home or Pro, or the upgrade edition [I don't know if you can install an older version of Windows using boot camp and then upgrade to XP]. One last bit of information: See if your school has a student purchasing plan. My school offers discounts on Macs and Dells. Your school may do something similar.

Go with the Mac. I'm a Mac user for a year, and before that I used PCs with both Windows XP and Linux. Mac is way better integrated, sleeker, better designed, faster and more reliable. Also, and it's a big plus, you can install and run Windows XP or Vista, should you decide to do so, on the same Mac with OS 10. Tests have shown that the fastest Windows computer is in fact a Mac. Get one of the Macbooks, white or black, with 2gh processor and 2gb RAM, and you'll be all set for years to go!

well if you want something that is reliable, long lasting, good battery you are looking at a macbook pro however being a college student, you will need to have a lot of softwares and programs that macs don't run. i personally would recommend a windows computer, since it has so many softwares that can be applied to it however if you just want a laptop that does media, documents, and some other research things, then macs are the way to go. keep in mind that macs are rather expensive

Get Mac's only for picture editing / video editing. thats the only reason i would buy a mac But i also wouldn't get Sony, as you could get the same spec on a Toshiba, HP, or Packard Bell laptop for a fraction of the price. With Apple and Sony, Half of what your paying for is the name and the logo.

The MacBook is definantly what you need. I am an avid Mac user, the mac has everything you need for Work, Play, and School. Once you go Mac, you dont really ever need to go back to PC. Now that Macs can Run Windows, you can now do more.

You've gotten some decent answers. A bit more info, the MacBook has built in type "n" wifi and a webcam. You also get to spend your time doing school work instead of trying to figure out which of the 115,000 Windows viruses your Sony might have. There are no MacOs X viruses in the wild.
