What is the difference between a laptop, notebook and netbook?

  • I am in the process of buying my daughter a laptop but some of them have notebook on them can someone please explain the difference. Tesco are selling an Acer Aspire at the moment which says it has a dvd writer in it and it is a notebook I thought that a notebook did not have a place for a dvd/cd.

  • Answer:

notebook and laptop are the same thing and are used interchangably. they can range in price from a couple of grand to a couple of hundered. typically, the more expensive they are, the better they will be at 3D rendering (eg. playing games), but these days there isn't much difference between cheap and expensive processors... at least in terms of doing everyday computer stuff like browsing the net and playing music, etc. if you daughter wants to play games (such as Sims 3), you might want to get a laptop without integrated graphics - ie a dedicated graphics card. most laptops have optical (dvd) drives. netbooks are lower powered, cheaper, and usually have better battery life. they're typically built around the Intel Atom processor, which does give a marked reduction in speed compared to most laptop/notebook processors, even when doing simple stuff. the small screens also usually have lower resolutions, which (combined with the lower power processor) can make web browsing a bit trying. and you can forget about playing games on them. most netbooks don't have optical drives. most people i know use netbooks as a second laptop for when they're out & about travelling, due to their lightness and that they often come with GPRS for mobile internet.

A netbook and a notebook are both sub categories of laptops. This means both are actually laptops. The conventional laptops that most people have been using over recent years is known as a notebook. These are larger sized laptops. A netbook is basically a small laptop with the same functions as a larger notebook but with performance sacrificied for size. Netbooks are ideal for light users of computers and are perfect for emailing, surfing the web, music and video. Notebooks are better for people who want to run multiple programs and do more complicated tasks. Netbooks are typically around 10 inches screen size and are cheap and portable. Notebooks usually start from 15 inches and are more expensive and heavier. Most manufacturers have now jumped on the netbook market as well so you are sure to find well made netbooks. You are mistaken it is actually netbooks which don't have a cd/dvd drive. The majority of notebooks have them built in as standard. If your daughter is not doing any complicated tasks and just wants her laptop for basic stuff then i would recommend a netbook, they are also cheaper. They all have similarities except a few: Notebooks have * No CD-ROM * Very small display * Low computing speed so don't install anything on it that eats it including antivirus * Small hard drive * Carriers selling it are contract based Notebooks AKA Laptops are direct opposite as they can have 2GB RAM on the 1000 or less cost. Some can run light graphic games. Heavy duty games you need an slizone.com laptop or custom budget made of 2000 bucks.

A laptop is a notbook, smaller versions without the DVD are called netbooks. PS, dont ever buy Acer. save your hard earned $$$.
