How are Hybrid Pi model and T model interchangeable?

Is it possible to upgrade the RAM on the Raspberry Pi (Model B)?

  • Is it possible to upgrade the RAM on the Raspberry Pi (Model B)? If you cannot upgrade the RAM card (if it has one - I am not sure), can you use a memory stick and set the OS to use it as RAM? Thanks in advance!

  • Answer:

The RAM is soldered directly onto the main processor IC (IC means integrated circuit, and is the proper name for a "chip"). These kinds of surface-mount ICs are designed to be soldered on using robots and specially-controlled ovens. They are not designed to be removable. It would be very difficult to successfully remove and replace the RAM chip in an electronics factory. You've got more-or-less zero chance of upgrading it at home. You could make the OS use a USB stick as swap-space, like most PCs do with some of their hard drive space. This is kind of like a poor-man's RAM with low performance. USB memory sticks are much, much, much, much slower than RAM, though, so you couldn't make a USB memory stick work anything like proper RAM.
