Why is the maximum memory usage 512?

Got new memory a 1 gig chip and a 512 went to bios said slot 1 not enabled only giving me 512 ram?

  • ok i know how to install memory doing ti for years this comp is new i put a gig chip in it and a 512 workwed fine on my old comp and yes its ddr and compatible but for some reason this other comp wont take both under system it says i got 338 mb ram and i got a gig and a 512 chip in there? is there a way to enable both slots bios says i got 512 mb on one slot and the other it says not enabled???

some motherboards won't let us use 2 different styles of memory chips...they both have to be either 1 sided or 2 sided (little microchips either on 1 side or both). or...some older motherboards won't accept the newer high density memory...check with the memory manufacturer to see if it's low- or high density.
