How to remove docker containers when out of disk space?

How can I remove the disk space from winsxs from my computer without harming my computer?

  • I know this question has been asked everywhere all over the internet, and resolved, but not to my liking. I want to know if you can reduce the disk space from the file winsxs( It's over 15 gig on my PC -_-). Don't answer if you can't answer properly. I don't want people saying "Oh, you can't so don't try. There's no way."I don't want them to waste my time, OK? So- How can I remove the disk space from the file winsxs without harming my computer? (Windows Vista)

Marvin and Jaydi3 are right. You don't ever walk into a question telling people what answers you want to hear. You admit you are asking a question that has been asked lots of times before. You admit you have read resolutions to this question. You admit that you don't like those resolutions. Why? Are you too lazy to perform them? Are you too scared to perform them? Are you not technically minded enough to perform them? Do you not understand those resolutions? Do you refuse to accept those resolutions because you stubbornly believe that there has to be a nice simple one click answer? As has been pointed out to you MULTIPLE times, both here and in the other resolutions you have read to this issue... it is a COMPLEX issue that has it's roots in the very design of Vista. Now, here is one fact that you may have missed. Windows Explorer may misreport the actual size of the WinSxS folder. “The Windows SxS directory represents the “installation and servicing state” of all system components. But in reality it doesn’t actually consume as much disk space as it appears when using the built-in tools (DIR and Explorer) to measure disk space used. “ and this is because the hard links to the files within the directory, are just that.. links. They are not copies of the actual files... that are somewhere else (like the System32 directory). You "can" reduce the size of the directory... "Regardless of whether the WinSxS directory is the physical repository for the actual component files or a collection of hard links to files stored across the drive, manually deleting files from this folder is a bad idea. Doing so could prevent applications from running and make the system unstable. So how do we reduce the size of the WinSxS folder–either as perceived by Explore or in actuality? There are three ways: 1. Uninstall applications (possible) 2. Use the vsp1cln.exe tool after installing Windows Vista SP1 3. Use the compcln.exe tool after installing Windows Vista SP2" But this means... awwwww... no simple one click solution. It means uninstalling the software you don't use. It means knowing whether or not you have Vista SP1 or SP2. It might even mean performing a system recovery, updating to SP1, using the SP1 clean up tool, and then installing SP2 and using the SP2 clean up tool. Both of those files come with their respective Service Packs, and reside in the System32 directory. So, you've got a solution... if you choose to refuse to accept it, that is on you. Just because you don't want to accept the truth, that doesn't make it not true. end of line

I agree with Marvin. You've pretty much answered the question yourself. There's no proper way of doing it- and unless you delete it altogether you're pretty much stuck. Unless you want to harm your computer. "I don't want people saying "Oh, you can't so don't try. There's no way."I don't want them to waste my time, OK?"... aren't you technically wasting our time with a stupid question? To be honest, you're better off asking this question on a proper computer forum.

I love it when people ask a question and know what the answer is. Especially when they say they don't want to hear that answer and then they say what the answer actually is. If you don't like the answer why not say "abracadabra" and then just delete the entire folder? What's the worst that could happen?

A couple of clarifications. The winSxS folder size is badly misleading. Up to 80% of the files are stored elsewhere, but winSxS uses hardlinks that make it appear that they reside in this folder. I.e. 2 or more folders, including winSxS, are claiming that a particular file belongs to them. The only certain and safe way to reduce winSxS is to do a clean OS reinstall. That's drastic, but gets rid of junk that has accumulated over the years. It's also much faster than attempting to figure out "can I delete this file?" one by one. If you delete the wrong file, something will stop working. Here's a better writeup on the subject, with some hints about reducing the size safely (mostly by removing unneeded language packs) http://www.out-web.net/?p=623
