What is the best Vaio laptop?

New Sony Vaio laptop problem, help! They are trying to put the blame on me and charge me, what can I do?

  • I bought a Vaio SZ on 17th April, and after 1 hour usage, I decided to download Firefox, unaware this may be incompatible with new Vista. The laptop shut down on me and restarted itself - when it came back on, it said 'media driver incompatiblity, please go to windows update to fix problem' - so i did. As I was downloading an Update, the laptop shut down on me AGAIN, but this time, the computer would not start up again properly, and the blue screen came up and then a black one telling me of a 'windows error' I took my laptop back to the store where the staff had a look and told me that the whole system had been completely wiped off and the only way this could've happened was someone doing it manually! They've sent it off to Sony to have a look but they said I may be charged for it. How can I be charged for something I didn't do? I've owned two Vaios in the past and never had problems. Who can I speak to, who can I contact??? Please help! Thank you.

  • Answer:

They are in breach of the Sale of Goods Act - the computer should be fit for it's purpose and that includes running Firefox. Try your local trading standards department. Vista is garbage and also is in breach of the Trades descriptions act and the Sale of Goods Act. Microsoft is currently being fined by the EU for non-compliance - try emailing the commissioner who sets their fine - maybe a $5,000,000 a day fine on Microsoft and they will not charge you. I mentioned that to a Microsoft employee who wanted to charge me and suddenly I got all the help needed free!

You must have got a DVD/CD known as recovery CD with your Laptop. You should have used it to bring up your system"Live" again......... I almost do it every month with my Toshiba Laptop......... If they have not given you any recovery CD , you must ask for it.......

It's not yet twelve months old and is under warranty. It should not have been affected by Firefox and Microsoft recommend running automatic updates so if that's what caused it it's not your fault. I personally don't think Sony will impose a charge for reinstalling the software, and if it was a hardware fault the warranty covers it. What puzzles me is where did you buy it? I cannot believe a computer store which does not sort a software problem out on site. They can normally restore from a disc image in a very short time. I would contact the office of fair trading if they attempt to charge you. Good luck.

Im afraid your a bit in the doggy do. I can sort this problem but I would need to talk it through with you. Email me for more info. If you want it done by SONY they will charge you a hell of a lot. I will do for free.

Aye Matey!

"Media driver incompatibility" is nothing to do with Firefox. More likely it's an automatic update installation (for Vista) which went wrong. It is hard to argue who is in the wrong and, therefore, who should foot the bill. Nobody seems to be actually "at fault" so I am afraid you should prepare yourself for a bill on the laptops return.

you just need to pay the charges dude, and then sue the crud out of sony, i recommend. no just kidding. pay em whatthey want, or go buy an hp pavilion dv6000. thats what i'm saving for. you can get them with a 2ghz processor, 2GB or memory, a 256MB video card, and an 80 gig hard drive for only $1350!!!! is that not unbelievable?
