How to upgrade a Dell laptop video card?

Anyone knows a site where i can buy an nvidia GeForce 8600M GT to upgrade my Dell Inspiron 1520 Laptop?

  • I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 Laptop with 256MBs of an nvidia GeForce 8600M GT graphic card. I would want to upgrade it to around 512MBs, but I've searched all over the web and i can not find a site that sells graphic cards for laptops. If anyone knows where i can find an upgrade for my video card, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

You cannot upgrade the graphics "cards" of laptops because all the graphics chips are soldered onto the one PCB with the rest of the components.

Sorry. You have an embedded video card. They can't be upgraded. Avatarxz

No can do! Thats why gamers use desktops!!!! About the only thing you can upgrade on Laptops is Memory and Harddrive. If you planned on using this notebook for games or anything that is graphically intense, you should have bought a desktop, a good sales rep should have told u this b4 you bought it.

You can't find a site that sells graphics cards for laptops as an aftermarket item because they don't exist. It is what it is. The card that is in there, while based on the 8600M chipset, is actually a proprietary card designed by some company (maybe nVidia, maybe not) to Dell's specifications. If there is an upgrade to be had, it would have to come from Dell.

Well contrary to popular belief, not all laptop graphics are integrated. For instance, the nvidia geforce go 8600m gt that is in your laptop. Acording to Dell and Nvidia it is a discrete componet not integrated into the chipset. unfortunatly at this time there are no models that offer more than 256mb discrete memory for the graphics adapter. It will share an aditional 256mb from system ram if you chose to do so. For the first link click on compare side-by-side tab to see info on your adapter. Thanks for the update Daniel G, I saw the modules you are talking about and asumed that they were listed as 512mb modules bacuse they would share 256mb system memory. Like so many other cards that are listed as 512mb cards but only have 256mb on board. Props to you.

I dont know about your specific laptop, but some laptops (such as my Alienware 51m-5500) have an MXM module that can be updated. All of you that say that laptops can upgrade the GPU are way outdated. http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/store.html sells a few graphics cards for laptops. Good laptop companies are actually switching to MXM cards making it possible to upgrade the graphics. It is now possible to upgrade RAM, GPU, HDD and your CPU in a laptop that was actually designed for upgrading.

Sorry, you can't do that. What you can do is upgrade the drivers it came with. I upgraded to 163.44, and found that it increased 10 fps is Flight Sim. Get the driver here: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com Select the OS you are running(under 'V163.44 all OS flavor is Out'). On the next page, look for driver | Modded INF | INF Enhancer | QuickStart Guide Click on 'driver', and save it to the desktop. Run the exe file, and it will extract some files. And finally upgrade the driver. Instructions here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=155566 To AnarkAtPlay: There is a 8600M with 512MB discrete memory. Dell does not offer that option, but other brands like Sager do.
