I got a $850+ laptop for my wife for about $500.... 1 - Go to the Dell outlet. (Save 30-35%) 2 - Find a 15% off coupon. (Ask me, I have one) 3 - You can save even more if you buy a discounted Dell Gift Card at eBay. (ie: buy a $100 gift card for $80) Presto! I just bought a Pink Inspiron 1525 for my wife, and a 1720 for myself. Both about half price.

Hard to say - what are medium-level games? That's hardly a term-of-art. I had to wait years to play "Half-life", but once I did, and once it was obsolete, I enjoyed it immensely. Is the original HL a medium game? If so, any lappie should play it, even the Pentium Dual Core machines. The real breaker is whether these games of yours will run on integrated graphics accelerators like the Intel GMA X3100. If they won't, but demand a discrete graphics card (the game's website should specify this) your options are narrowing, and you will be closer to the $1,000 line. If you have some specific game in mind, look up its page on Amazon.com - there are some helpful customers who post reviews describing how well the program ran on their computer, and what kind of machine they had. Do Not rely on the system requirements mentioned on the game's box - these are extremely optimistic standards of the least powerful system that will run the program, and they are deceptive as to what system is powerfu enough to allow entertaining game play.

HP. They are great for school and can easily play average-medium games and more. They are very fast and reliable and i have one and it hasn't given me any problems. DO NOT go with the SONY VAIO!!!!! I had one and it crashed 4 times, is very slow, and has corrupt software. I am warning you DO NOT GO WITH THE SONY VAIO!!!!!, go with an HP

But you want a laptop - only Apple makes laptops. Anything that runs Winblows by default is a craptop.
