How can I connect my laptop to my TV?

  • Alright folks, so I've been looking into some info on how to connect a laptop to a TV. The easiest way to do so is when your TV has the same output as your laptop, but mine does not. My laptop does not have an S-Video output, but it does have a VGA output. The TV has a 4 pin female s-video output. I looked into that, but noticed that the VGA to S-Video cable has a female S-Video port. Will hooking up an extra male to male 4 pin S-Video cable onto the VGA to S-Video cable work? So it'll be like this; VGA to S-Video (Female)----Male to Male S-Video Cable----It'll all connect to the female S-Video output on the TV. Now, I've also looked into a VGA to 3-RCA cable.. Will that be able to work? Thanks!

    Yes and No. As long as the RCA cable has an S-Video cable. But, here's the problem with 3-RCA cable. RCA cable usually sends both Video and Sound to your TV. But, a VGA port sends only Video ! You will need a proper VGA card for this. Which most laptops don't. I recommend a VGA to S-Video converter. Don't buy a VGA to S-Video connector. Because most computers don't have the circuitry required to connect your laptop to a TV. VGA is not just a different type of plug for the same video signal. It is a completely different method of transmitting a video signal across a wire than S-Video. You can't just get an adapter plug and expect to convert VGA to S-Video. It requires electronic circuitry to actually convert the signal to a different type of signal. Computers with TV OUT capabilities have this circuitry contained inside them.

Ok, first, you cannot directly hook up vga to a t.v. even with a cable. This doesn't work, as the signals are not compatible(tried it with too many laptops, and t.v.s, and various converter cables). The easiest way would be to get a converter box. Link is to a type at newegg.
