Is it bad to constantly charge your laptop?
-
i have an hp pavillion dv4-1125nr, which has a 6 cell lithium ion battery. i always leave the charger in my laptop because the charge never really lasted long since i've gotten the computer and i'm too lazy to take it out when it says its done fully charging anyway. now i'm worried this maybe affecting my batteries life in the long run. do lithium ion batteries get overcharged? whenever i look at the charge status and its full, it says fully charged. but if the battery happens to actually need some more charging, it says "charging." so does that mean when its fully charged, it stops charging?

Answer:
As Mercuri says, the battery stops charging when it's fully charged. An older battery will lose charge even if it's not being used which is why your battery will sometimes show it's charging even though you've had it plugged in all the time. Also, deliberately running down an older battery and then charging it to full does nothing except shorten the life and capacity of the battery. There is no reason to take the battery out and you are best off having the laptop plugged in while you are using it.

No it doesn't get overcharged but what happens is the battery is constantly being charged and discharged which WILL decrease the battery's life. What you SHOULD do is remove the battery and then leave the charger plugged in. That is the best and most ideal way to go. Best of luck.
its not recommended to have a laptop on charge permanently as it can degrade the battery life and your battery will not hold a full charge after a period of time, eventually it will not hold charge at all and turn off as soon as charger is removed

Does not affect it. This is because when the battery is full, the laptop stops charging the battery.

For a long time to connect an external power supply, it is recommended disconnect the battery, you can maximize performance and to maintain battery life.

Once your battery is completely charged, the laptop will stop adding any more power to the battery, but will sustain enough to ensure that you don't lose any percentage of your battery. If there was any risks, then Microsoft would warn you when you purchase the laptop. At the end of the day, they're designed to be constantly charged, and we're talking about powerful batteries here, not litttle AA's.

this is not about bad or good. Do you read and follow use manual? off course battery stops charging when it is fully charged. and it says charging, if need some more charging. please think when you are turning on laptop, and never turning off. and you don't follow how to maintain it. it will effect its life. so I suggest you to remove charger after batter fully charged, or you don't work on laptop. thanks
