Why does my screen flicker yellow and green?

Why does my Toshiba satellite screen flicker then turn grey?

  • I have a 3 year old Toshiba satellite U300 running on Windows 7. Twice this week, I was taking notes in class, when the screen froze. It then began to flicker, turning certain areas of the screen black while other areas remained normal. After a few seconds, the screen turned grey. My computer was still running so I was forced to shut it down. After I re-started, everything seemed to work fine. Any ideas regarding what the problem might be and how I should go about fixing it? Thanks in advance.

A couple of tests... When this happens, try moving the LCD screen back and forth a bit to see if it has any effect. If moving the screen makes it flicker or change colors, it sounds like a bad cable or flaky inverter. This is relatively cheap to fix, especially if you know how to use a screwdriver. You can find an LCD assembly in ebay and replace it yourself. If moving the screen makes no difference it may be the graphics adapter. It could be a software issue, in which case you can try updating the video drivers. Or it could be a hardware problem which could only be resolved by replacing the system board (expensive and not easy to do if you are inexperienced).
