Why is my laptop being dumb?

Why does my laptop only power-up with the laptop battery plugged in?

  • I have been using this LGR48 laptop for 2.5 years. Recently, I forgot to switch off the electrical switch which the adaptor was plugged into. Electricity was running to my laptop but it was shut down (the battery light detector lit up for the entire night). The laptop battery was not plugged into my laptop that time because I do not have a habit of letting my laptop run on battery (wanted to extend battery life). When I woke up I switched it off immediately. BUT hours later when I tried to start up my laptop using the adaptor alone, it did not respond. The battery light detector did not light up either, like it didn't detect any electricity supply. I plugged in my laptop battery, together with the adaptor plugged in, my laptop was able to power-up. However, both battery and adaptor plugged in, my laptop was changing between charging and not-charging every now and then. Not to mention, the brightness of my screen as it tries to accomodate the changing power scheme. And so, I removed the battery while my laptop is still running and the adaptor plugged in. Surprisingly, my laptop works fine. It could function normally just like before (the problem starts). But when I shut down and try to power start it using the adaptor alone, it's the same problem again. I've using the above method to start up my laptop since yesterday. But I feel really uneasy, like my laptop would crash anytime soon. Could anyone enlighten me of a possible cause? Also, does this call for immediate attention i.e. send it for repair immediately! If you do know of the cause, is the damagee extensive enough that you'd recommend me to get a new laptop??? Sigh.

  • Answer:

Try remove the battery and charger/ac adapter/power cord from your laptop, press and hold the power button for 20 seconds to discharge any residual current inside the laptop. This clears your RAM and is like a hardware reset. Replace the battery and charger/ac adapter/power cord and turn your laptop on. Check if it's something to do with your laptop power cord or power source problem. Take the battery out and power on your laptop with the charger only. ---Make sure your laptop power jack and charger plug tip are securely connected. If power jack is loose you can find laptop power jack on ebay. However, fixing and soldering the power jack requires professional skill. --Always, the green/blue LED on charger needs to be constantly on. If not, replace the defective charger. Since battery/ ac adapter has its own lifespan and does not last forever, to help you save up some money, you can consider getting a charger under lifetime warranty from store like topmic.com Wish the Best.

Batteries will slowly lose their life over time. In your case, it sounds like a faulty battery. You may have to get it replaced
