Which HP laptop is better for a college student?

Which laptop manufacturer is better? HP, Toshiba, Compaq or Apple?

So I am a desperate college student whose previous laptop (Toshiba) crashed. I need a new one since it was getting really old anyway. Please help me out with this since I am not a comp. savvy person. I am having trouble choosing between HP Pavilion Entertainment Notebook, Toshiba notebook, Compaq Presario or Apple Macbook Pro. Which one is the best for a college student and occasional gaming, browsing and watching movies? I have a budget of $1000 so where should I head to find cheap laptops (possibly new... i know i won't get macbook pro that cheap) besides ebay? P.S. It should have a good battery life (should last atleast 21/2-4 hrs). THANKS 2 ALL THOSE WHO ANSWERED! IT IS MUCH APPRECIATED!

I have an acer aspire 17" which came with windows vista. I really like this laptop - it is not too heavy to carry short distances but is chunky enough to feel solid when working with it. I usually use it with electricity but I think the battery is only about 2 hours but you could always have a spare battery for the really long requirements. Sorry to sling in another alternative to think about.
