Why does my HP laptop hang or freeze?

Does a laptop's screen completely freeze when it overheats?

  • I know, this is probably a stupid question, but I have an hp presario c700 laptop. Because I take most of my classes online (college student) i've kinda made a bad habit of doing all my work in bed with the laptop in my lap or on top of the blanket. I've read online that a laptop will have really loud fan, shut off on its own, and just feel really hot..er something like that. Well, at first I thought it was a virus problem, so I would continuously run ad-aware and malwarebytes in safe mode and neither would find anything. Then looking into it more and ruling out the virus problems, I found that my computer actually has symptoms of overheating, but instead of shutting off on it's own...the screen will completely freeze to where I can't move the mouse or push any buttons and I have to manually restart the computer. I'm just trying to figure out if overheating may be the only problem. My laptop does get REALLY hot to where the bottom of the laptop and the mousepad get almost too hot to touch, so it is DEFINITELY overheating, but if it's freezing instead of shutting off on its own, would that be something other than overheating?

  • Answer:

Yes, there is a great chance that your laptop might under overheat condition; issues can cause your laptop freeze and randomly shut off. Remember, never use your laptop and charger on bed/couch with fan ventilation covered. Clean laptop air vents with airduster and make sure air vents are not blocked. Always set laptop on a flat surface, so air can flow freely around and underneath it. Install more RAM/memory Buy a good quality laptop cooling pad. Buy a good quality charger. A good quality charger is not supposed to be too hot unless you were using it on your couch or bed that block the heat dissipation and ventilation. That is a bad habit since it will shorten the laptop and charger lifespan significantly. Since battery/ ac adapter has its own lifespan and does not last forever, to help you save up some, you can consider getting a good quality charger under lifetime warranty from topmic.com Wish the Best.

sometimes freezing is due to system crash...or incompatible software/drivers....check system log. safe mode: nothing is running except the system...so not sure if scanning in safe mode will help much overheating: depends on hw..sometimes it will give you a BSOD then (almost at the same time) restart the computer....if a hardware component is actually blown up, ur computer probably wont be able to start up again

Not A

If its overheating, that could defiantly be the cause, freezes and shutdowns are common. Ty getting a can of compressed air and blow out your vents and fans, and consider buying a laptop cooler. Placing it on a board or a binder might help also to allow air flow through the vents.
