How To Run A Command In Ubuntu?

Can't install Ubuntu 8.10 on my Aspire?

  • Here are some quick specs to start: Aspire 5740DG-5217 - 4 GB ram - 500 GB Harddrive - Intel Core i3 Problem: I've done a clean install of windows 7 pro and just resized the partitions to have around 300Gb for win 7 there are 3 partions in the drive, they are: - 12.70 Recovery partition - 100 mb System, Active, Primary Partition - 257.65 (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary partition I now have one partition left with 195.31 GB which is unallocated, just the way i like it for alternate OS's. So, I then boot from disk, ubuntu shows up, i pick my language, i then select install Ubuntu, and then it loads for a while. After loading for a few minutes it doesn't bring up the traditional installation manager, it brings up the laptop's command prompt and tells me the ubuntu version i have along with some of the disclaimers then tells me to use sudo commands to run a command as administrator... I've checked for disk defects, and nothing, i've tried simply running ubuntu straight from the disk and it just does the same thing. If i try downloading the latest version (either 10.04 or 10.10.. most likely 10.04) will that work or give me the same problem? while i try that can anyone tell me what is going on here and how to fix? and no, i do not want to run linux using a virtual machine... thanks in advance
