MACBOOK vs. MACBOOK PRO? 10 POINTS IF I LIKE YOUR ANSWER!?

  • I had a Macbook... was very happy with it. Someone spilled water on it... now I am trying to decided whether to get another Macbook or if I should upgrade to the Macbook Pro..... I know everyone says to upgrade to the PRO, but I want to know WHY? The Macbook is $999 for 250gb hard drive (while the PRO is $1,199 for 160gb). i could get better memory for the macbook and it would still be cheaper than the PRO....... I just want to know WHY everyone likes the PRO so much better? What does it have that the Macbook doesn't? If I can get an actual good answer that I have been trying to look for, I will give 10 points! I know about the processing speed, the memory (both can be upgraded on either computer BTW and I know that the PRO can be 13, 15 or 17 inch... but what else does it have to offer?????) I've wasted a LOT of my questions trying to find out the difference between the two computers so if anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

  • Answer:

There's a few core differences between the MacBook and the MacBook Pro, including these: 1. MacBook Pro has FireWire 800, while the MacBook no longer has any FireWire at all. If you've got a MiniDV camera to use with your computer, you don't have much of a choice anymore - you have to pick the Pro. 2. MacBook Pro includes a built-in SD card slot 3. MacBook Pro (15.4" and above only) has a headphones out port and a separate line in port for external audio sources; MacBook now has only one port to handle both, so it's one or the other. 4. MacBook Pro has a higher-quality LCD panel with better color reproduction 5. MacBook Pro includes a backlit keyboard for use in low lighting situations. 6. While both are now unibody. the MacBook Pro is made entirely of aluminum, making for a nicer finish and more sturdy case. 7. You mentioned upgrades, but the Pro line offers more advanced upgrades on the higher end. For example, the MacBook Pro is the only one in which you can get discrete graphics with the NVIDIA 9600 GPU, offering dramatically better gaming and graphics performance. The Pro also supports up to 8GB of memory, while the MacBook maxes out at 4GB. There's probably some other minor differences I might be forgetting, but those are the most important ones that come to mind. If none of those differences really mean anything to you, by all means, go for the MacBook! No need to pay extra for something you don't want. EDIT: Just to clarify some things due to later responses: - The latest MacBook does in fact have LED backlighting just like the Pro - The latest MacBook has a Mini DisplayPort plug for external displays, just like the rest of Apple's line - The latest MacBook has a glass trackpad with full support for multi-touch gestures, just like the rest of Apple's laptops - The weight difference between the latest MacBook and the 13.3" MacBook Pro is only 0.2 pounds, with the Pro weighing slightly less - Both come standard with the same CPU - Both MacBook and MacBook Pro have sealed, integrated batteries that can only be changed by Apple - Both MacBook and the 13.3" Pro have the combined audio in/out port - The latest MacBook does indeed support driving a 30" Apple Cinema Display, just like the Pro None of those are reasons to upgrade from a MacBook to a MacBook Pro.

Good question! Actually, the MacBook outperformed the 13" MacBook Pro in laptop tests. You should really go to http://www.apple.com/mac/whichmacbook/compare.html and see a chart Apple has that compares all the tech specs.

You can compare the main details of the various models on Apple's store, by going to the MacBook or MacBook Pro page, scrolling down and clicking the Compare item. Summarising the current MacBook vs cheapest 13" MacBook Pro: Price difference is US$200 ($999 vs $1199). MacBook Pro's aluminium body is much more robust than the plastic body of the MacBook. MacBook Pro is lighter than the MacBook (4.5 vs 5 pounds). MacBook Pro is a little thinner (0.95 vs 1.08 inches when closed) but 0.02 inches wider. MacBook Pro's trackpad supports multi-touch gestures and has an integrated button, while the MacBook one supports two finger gestures and has a separate button. MacBook Pro has keyboard backlight, so you can use it in a dark room and read the keys. MacBook Pro's display has LED backlighting. This is significantly brighter, goes to full brightness immediately instead of having to "warm up", has longer lifespan and uses less power. MacBook Pro has higher quality display, e.g. better viewing angle. MacBook Pro has an integrated battery (you can't swap it) which gets 7 hours of running time compared to 5 hours for the MacBook (real world usage will be somewhat lower for both). The MacBook Pro's battery should also have a much longer lifespan (number of charge cycles). This alone almost pays for the difference - the MacBook will probably need a new battery in two or three years, while the MacBook Pro's battery will probably last for five years (as long as you use it properly). MacBook Pro has a slightly faster CPU (2.26 GHz vs 2.13 GHz). More memory can be installed in the MacBook Pro (8 GB vs 4 GB), though it is still expensive to go above 4 GB. (It will get cheaper.) MacBook Pro has Firewire 800 instead of Firewire 400, which allows faster data transfer if you have Firewire 800 peripherals. (Firewire 400 devices can be used on a Firewire 800 port with the right cable or an adapter.) MacBook Pro has an SD memory card slot. MacBook Pro has a Mini DisplayPort instead of Mini-DVI for video output. This is mostly a neutral issue (different adapters required), but the Mini DisplayPort (MacBook Pro) is able to drive a 30" Cinema display with an expensive adapter, while the Mini-DVI (MacBook) cannot use an external display that large. MacBook Pro has one small disadvantage: it has a combined audio in/out port which loses optical input and can't be connected to independent input and output devices without some kind of adapter.
