Why is my laptop not turning?

Why does my laptop keep turning itself off?

  • My laptop keeps turning itself off in 5 or so minutes after it has been turned on. Before it turns itself off, it slows down a lot even though I didn't use up a lot of RAM. Any advice/insights other than seeing a person who can fix computers or calling the laptop's helpline? The laptop I'm using is a 1-2 year old Toshiba. Cheers

The symptoms that your are experiencing can be related to one of these ... Your hard drive is dying and you need to backup now before it quits. PSU's are known to give similar symptoms when needed to be replaced in desktops. Defective Ram modules can also cause such behaviors. A damaged operating system can also cause the system to shut down also. An electrical short on the mother board can also shut down the system. The fan on your CPU is defective (not turning fast enough) Laptops are difficult to work on because of it's size and many repair shops won't even consider fixing them. The possibilities I have mentioned above are from good sources and it is likely one of them that is causing your laptop to shut off. Determining which of these is the culprit can be costly if one starts to replace parts one by one until the symptoms go away. Because of this I would advise that you bring it in a laptop repair shop to minimize the cost. Best of luck

You need to get that laptop checked out. It sounds like the cpu fan broke. That would explain why it was going very slow before it shut down. That is a special protective mechanism which is designed to prevent the cpu from frying.

i have a toshiba and the same thing kept happening to me, i cleaned the fan out and the problem stopped! you may be able to do this with a hoover but i had to take off the fan covers and pull all the gunk out, it works fine now!!

If the power supply is fine, then it sounds like it might be overheating and switching itself off to protect from damage. Is the fan working properly?

Normally they switch off if they detect that they are overheating.

Using it on your lap? Is the fan overheating?

Try downloading spyware software then do a scan. This also happened to me.

Viruses, Trojans, worms, spyware take up a lot of RAM. And I think you may have a virus, so if you do this scan, then it should help a little. If not, get professional help. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=ad724ae0-e72d-4f54-9ab3-75b8eb148356&DisplayLang=en good luck!
