I am thinking of buying laptop Acer Aspire at $600. Is this model worth it for long-term professional use?

Any sharing of experiences or references to effectiveness, reliability, and other performance standards of Acer laptops, generally, would be equally appreciated. I am poised to choose between Compad and Acer, the latter seemingly offering a better mix of price and expected performance. Answer:
Short term, this would be fine. But for long-term, I would recommend a duo processer. It can be a AMD turionX2, Athlon X2, Centrino Duo or the new Intel Core 2 Duo. This would last you for much longer. Otherwise, you are one the right track. 1024 mb is the lowest I would recommend. For me 100gb harddrive is low, but you can always get an external hard drive. Just to run the Vista, it requires 512 mb, but I recommend 1024 because it will eat up everything. Also, for Vista, you need to set aside a whopping 40gb of harddrive space.

I am sure you can use it for long term. Be sure to take a high capacity battery like 9 cell which can give you good battery back up.

Yes, the important part is that you can have 4 gigs of ram. The new version of Windows Vista needs 1 gig to run efficiently. You have a great ability to expand. For 600 bucks, you can't go wrong.

I have the very same lap top that im typeing this on now. I would really sell it to you for like 300 bucks its only a month old. Good computer excpet cant handle multi tasking. The battery is awsome im in college i take it all over and it always has battery life. All and all in a scale of 1-10 I would say say 5

I bought an acer laptop just 2 weeks ago and it's woking pretty well . I highly recommend it. I've purchased the Acer aspire 3100, which is highly upgradable to 4gb ram and dual core cpu

I would consider another brand. Acer a few years bad made some really bad desktops and did not stand behind their work. I'm surprised to see them comeback this quickly. Packard Bell did the same thing and they are not around anymore. If you do buy a Acer, make sure you have a good warranty, 3 or more years. Laptops are expensive to repair. The display costs the most. If it were to break you would have to shell out about $800 to fix it. I hope this helps.

I have the same laptop, which I've used and abused for several weeks now. I've been wary of Acer due to their Quality Control issues a few years ago when the school district I worked as a tech for ended up switching to Dell's. But for the price/features and bonus of having an AMD64 I figured it was worth trying. Of course the first thing I did with mine was to install Slackware Linux on it. I've since beat it to death with a perl data manipulation program I'm working on which ran continually at an average of 75-80% CPU utilization and almost constant disk access for about two weeks, amongst running other things like the mp3 player, burning a disk or two, playing games, etc., until the program filled up the drive partition with processed data. So far it's been quite suitable and I'm pleased with it, so I'd say it's worth it for long-term professional use. Obviously the long-term physical durability is yet to be seen however. I generally avoid recommending Compaq's, too proprietary to my liking and a couple bad experiences in supporting them just in general.
