Why does my laptop have a fan underneath it?
-
just a quick question about my particular laptop, i have an exhaust on the side of my laptop which blows the hot air out. the fan, that is underneath the laptop on the base, which takes in the cold air is sometimes covered whether it be on my lap or on my desk. here comes my question. why did they make a laptop like this? when i have it on my desk, it starts smelling and it doesn't smell good. like burnt metal with a paltic smell too. i heard you can buy a external fan that you sit the laptop on top of but they are crap. should i raise my pc off the desk? to allow adequate air flow? i was considering sawing a ciruclar whole into my desk and position the fan under that. it just annoys me that the laptop gets hot and it sometimes shuts down coz it's become too hot. why don't people mention this about laptops? or is it just mine? it's a tosh equium by the way.

Answer:
I can not tell you how much I can relate, in fact I was just about to ask this question until I noticed you did, my advice is what I myself do. I put the computer in a way so that some of the computer is hanging over the edge of my desk, so the fan is fine, then i move my chair so that I am in front of the screen, just by twisting your body.

So it doesn't over heat itself when you are using it for a long period of time.

All Lap Top comes with a fan to warm your lap and cool your Laptop.

ulike most desktop computers laptops are built compact which means less room for your laptop to breath with that is why your laptop has a fan.. also when u place it on your lap it is not allowing the necessary air flow to cool down the hardware... note most electronics built to use for long periods of time have fans just for the cooling down part... if your laptop begins to get really warm i would shut it down and let it sit and cool for a while or you may regret it...

Just as it is there are some rubber fittings underneath it; these are safety measures to prevent the laptop from sliding while on a slippery top and also offer breathing space for the fan to get cold air from. You may decide to increase the air space by increasing the rubber fittings' length. Thanks. Rono

If you place any laptop on your lap, or any other soft surface, you must ensure the air vents underneath are clear. Otherwise it will overheat. Once this happens a few times it tends to burn areas of the motherboard. After this the burnt area will build up a higher resistance and increase the problem so it always overheats.

A laptop desk should solve your problem, as well as improving your posture! They have a great selection of laptop desks at LaptopDesk.net http://laptopdesk.net/ including these really pretty and colorful painted ones http://laptopdesk.net/paintedfuturas1.html In addition to the potential for laptops overheating directly on your lap, they force you to hold your body at unnatural angles to use them. A laptop desk can solve all these problems, and make using your computer much more comfortable and enjoyable overall. Hope you find one you love!

an obvious one... to keep it cool and prevent it from overheating. the fan will be on the bottom for if you use it on a table there should be a pad in each corner of the laptop to raise it from a flat surface

Usually, laptops have rubber feet on the bottom that keep the air inlet off of the desk. Are the rubber feet on your computer worn or missing. if so, I'm sure you can buy replacements.
