What does a modem and a router do?

Talktalk broadband(adsl)...help with wireless connection...ROUTER/MODEM ROUTER? What do I need?

  • I have TALKTALK broadband with a ADSL Modem. I need to kno what i NEED to surf the net on 2 PC's(one is wireless laptop). The more research i do the confused i get! What is a router and what is a modem router? which will i need? which router/modem router is the most reliable.

    You should get a Modem/Router. Basically the difference between a modem/router and a router is that a modem/router integrates both adsl modem and a router into one. The router however does not have a modem so you may need a separate adsl modem to be connected into the router. However I would really encourage you to get a modem/router as it eases things A Lot! Generally, Billion produces great modem/router however I am not sure if you can get it from your place. You would need to connect the modem router unto the phone line and use a ethernet cable to connect from the router unto your computer. If you want a wireless connection for your internet, you could buy a Wireless Adsl Modem/Router. D-Link, Linksys, Belkin, Netgear have a few products that has the features in it. If you can't get Billion, then try using Linksys Belkin or Netgear. I have had bad experiences with a few D-Links so I wouldn't recommend it to you.

Hi there, as far as i know your ISP(Internet service provider) is the one that will provide the DSL modem...what you need is the router for you to share upto 4 computers...since the router has 4 ports(RJ45) available...first thing that you need to do is ask them to install the internet(cables,etc.) then once you have the internet running on one PC...you should buy the router and must have a cross cable connection (note: Same thing with the DSL cable that is connected to your computer the only difference is the color sequence, kindly ask for it in a computer store this type of connection usually is made to order as far as the stores in my place is concern) then read the manual for installation procedures...hope that helps!
