How do you hook up a laptop to a telly?

How do I hook up my laptop PC to a tv via the VGA input/output?

  • I have an Acer Aspire 5003WLMi laptop that I purchased about a year and a half ago. This has the 15-pin VGA port on the back. I just purchased a Samsung flat screen tv last week that also has the VGA port. I tried using a male-male VGA cord to plug into both the laptop and the tv, in the hopes of using the tv as my laptop monitor, but couldn't get it to appear on the tv. Is there anything else that I need to do to hook this up? Does anyone know the steps I would need to take in the Control Panel options on the laptop to set this up? Is there anything on the tv that I need to setup to be able to read from this source, etc.? Thanks for any help that anyone can provide!

  • Answer:

right click on the desktop and choose properties. Click on the settings tab. Where it says Display there will be a drop down dialog box. You will see that your Display is 1.Plug and Play...... Choose 2. Plug and Play.... Click on Apply button then ok. You should now see your desktop on the tv. Also read the TVs manual to find out what resolution it should be set at before you click apply.

You usually need to press the Fn key + F4 (on my compaq). Most laptops have similar keys. They enable the external screen option. Look in your laptop manual.

You also need to read the TV manual to see how to switch the input to your computer instead of the normal TV input.
