Problems collecting payment for laptop repair job?
-
Sorry for the length but i feel i need to explain it in full detail. I work at the Dell service desk and perform phone troubleshooting support for people throughout North America. I also have a side job of performing computer support for people i know and their aquiantances. A fellow Somalian had a computer problem where he bought a 2nd hand computer and the DVD burner does not work. He asked me if i can fix the issue and how much the cost would be. I told him i charge $80 per hour and however long it takes me to fix the problem is what the charge will be, but i doubt it will be more than a few hundred dollars, but you never know. He told me to proceed. I worked on his computer all day saturday and all day sunday and could not figure out the problem. I had to ask a co-worker of mine for assistance and he refused to do it for free and told me it would be a $200 charge for him to make a house visit to fix the issue. My problem is two fold: My co-worker took less than 5 minutes to fix the problem when he replaced the DVD cable thing that hooks into the electronic circuit board thing. Now he is irate because i cannot pay him until i get paid from my friend. I also find his charge excessive given the short time it took My friend is refusing to pay the bill i submitted to him of $1700. This is the cost of my labor as well as the $200 cost of my co-workers bill for the house visit. I told him the time it takes, is the time it will take to fix the issue. I am not sure what to do now. Suing him for this money will probably cost me just as much as i would get in a judgement against him.

Answer:
I'd be pretty upset as well. $1700 is excessive. You should charge him only $1500 as the other $200 that your co-worker charged you should be deducted from the final bill. You shouldn't have tacked on or added a 3rd party bill to your own as that is bad business. If he doesn't give you the $1500 within 30 days, just keep the laptop and sell it for a really good price.

Firstly, let's get the truth out. You work for Dell support, you answer the phone and lead people to believe your are a computer technician which we all know is a line of B.S.. You so called Dell phone technicians read from a script. Secondly, if you were foolish enough to return the PC before getting paid, you are S.O.L.. I suggest you find a telemarketing job and get away from helping people with their PCs. EDIT: As others have stated, from what you say, you couldn't fix a sandwich let alone someones computer! Cable thing and circuit board thing CLEARLY point out the fact you know nothing and are fleecing customers! Last but not least, if I knew your real name, the FIRST place I would call is Dell and report you for fraud. Then I would if at all possible, find the friend you are screwing and help him cave your head in! Charge the man the over rated 200 bucks since you claim yourself its a rip off and then consider if the 200 bucks is a ripoff, you are 100 times worse at ripping people. Give the guy you owe the 200 bucks his money and then quit bilking people for your ignorance. If you pulled that crap on me, you would be sporting a full body cast bubba. EDIT: Listen up. I've run a reputable repair shop for computers for 30 years now. It is PERFECTLY CLEAR to me that you have NO business even looking inside a computer. You DO NOT have one iota of experience. Your post shows it plain as day. How would you feel if an auto repairman spent 10 hours working on your car and couldn't find the problem so he sent it somewhere else and it took ten minutes? The part cost 50 bucks and the labor charged was another 50 but the original mechanic wanted to charge you 2000 dollars? Would you pay the bill? Don't act so innocent Forrest! Why should someone else be connived into believing you are a reputable PC repair tech when you aren't even close to being one and trying to charge them for your ineptitude? You are a crook as plain as the nose on your face. One bit of wisdom for you. Whatever goes around, comes around. You want to lie and cheat people, you will get your just deserts tenfold in the end.

I don't care if you are from South Philly. You are trying to rip off your "friend' for work done on company time but "off the books". I would fire you if I was your boss. You are charging more than a new computer costs. This whole scenario adds up to one thing.......You are a TROLL.

Considering that you are attempting to charge someone (most likely) 2x more than the cost of the computer, you should consider lowering your charge. The fact that you couldn't repair the computer (and someone else did) should tell you something. It's bad business to charge someone excessive amounts for work you couldn't complete. At the very least, charge him $200 and give it to your friend. Yes, you LOOKED at his computer. No, you didn't actually fix it. That's like taking your car to a mechanic and paying him to wiggle the cables around. Why you included the fact that he is Somalian I have no idea...unless you're working for someone in Africa and you're being duped.

My advice is to bill him $200, and give it to your friend, if you can call him that. He has his rate, and he kept his part of the bargain. I am sickened that you would try to charge someone $1700 when the problem was a bad/disconnected cable. I hate to say it my friend but if it took you all day and you couldn't figure that out you have absolutely no business charging for your services. I'm pretty sure what you have done is enough to make ANYONE irate, you are probably trying to charge him triple what he paid for the computer just to fix a minor problem. To put it into perspective for you, its like taking your car in with a flat tire and then getting a $30,000 bill for repair. The ratio is the same. At the very least you will have to explain to him in detail why it took you so long to fix the problem. Good luck with that one.

You have absolutely NO right to charge him as you did not fix the problem, all he should be charged is the cost of the actual repair, which you did NOT do. Your labour is an illegal charge. You obviously are not competent to carry out repairs, as you describe the DVD cable thing ad do not even know what it is called. Anybody who could not identify such a simple problem is really not even competent to wok on a service desk. The absolute maximum that should have been charged for this fault would have been if the drive had failed and needed replacing. This would have been abou half an hour labour, and the cost of the drive. If replacing the connector involved dismantling the whole machine, 1hour should have been the maximum it took. I would guess i you took him to court, the court might find in his favour as you have tried to cheat him. Hopefully they might pass their findings to a prosecutor for a charge of fraud against you. I suggest you get out of the computer business as you are useless.

Hi there, Both you and your friend charge too much for your "services" and it seems you have been caught "in your own trap". Here is what I would do: 1. Pay your friend the $200- for finding the bad cable and fixing it. He acted in good faith (even if he charges too much). 2. Charge your customer the $50- that your service was worth plus $5- for the new cable.. The extra $145- is the cost of your computer repair "lesson". Hope this helps, Al
