Help with new laptop battery?

So I just received a new battery for my hp laptop in the mail. My old one was so dead; that it was at the point where I couldn't even unplug my laptop without it completely shutting down. So I put the new battery in yesterday. I needed to do something on my laptop as soon as I put the battery in though. So I couldn't charge the battery for 10 hours like the package said. I had it plugged in as well at that time for a few hours too, but I don't know if that help. Now i'm just using the battery and charging it normally, but now it seems like the battery isn't lasting that long. Also because my previous battery was so low, when I would put it on hibernate; the next time I would turn it on to use it, a black screen would come up saying the computer didn't shut down correctly and an option to start windows normally. I thought that was just because the battery was really low, but just a few minutes ago when I went to turn my computer on that message came up again. Can anyone help me? Should I still charge my battery for the 10 hours? How can that message stop coming up?

I say, just charge it for 10 hours. Nothing can go wrong. Then try running the PC on battery. I suggest draining it out completely after that and it will clear out all the cobwebs.
