The laptop was not switching on and occasionally switching itself off?

How to prevent my laptop from switching to standby mode?

  • Hi, everyone!!! I just wanted to upload a big file (≈1GB) on a file-sharing web-site and it was going to take about 2 hours, but the problem was I was using my laptop. It switches to a stand-by mode almost every 3 minutes of inactivity. I just wanted to start the uploading process and go do some other cool stuff, but alas - when the laptop switches to stand-by the whole process stops :( . Is there any way for me to circumvent this problem besides sitting in front of the laptop and moving the mouse randomly during 2 whole hours?

  • Answer:

Go to Control Panel, Power Options, Power Schemes, and you should be able to change your settings in there. Turn off Monitor: Your laptop will manage your monitor by turning the monitor off if you are away from your computer for a period of time you set it to. For example, if you set it to 5 minutes, if you haven't moved your mouse or touched your keyboard for 5 minutes, your monitor turns off. It saves power output to your monitor and thus, a longer life for your monitor as well. Turn off harddisk: Your hard drive will be turned off. When there is no tasks running on your hard drive, to save power output to your hard drive. Make sure this option is more than the amount you place to have your monitor turned off. System Standby: Your computer will be in standby mode, meaning your hard drive, monitor, and your computer itself will be "sleeping" to save power throughout your computer, Another thing you may want to do is go to the "Advanced" tab and change the way your laptop behaves when you close your lid. Set it to "Do Nothing" but for your information, keeping your lid closed while downloading stuff is not recommended as your laptop will get hotter.
