The answering your question Elizabeth is you need virtual memory if your actual Memory (Ram) is to low to handle all the running application. When you use virtual memory you are assigning hard drive space to use for read write memory. The amount of disk space you have determines how much virtual memory you can assign. Yes virtual memory will speed up your computer and unless you can upgrade the memory on you laptop nothing else will improve its speed as much. Note you can usually add or upgrade memory on your laptop. Check the manufactures web site to see what you can add or update to. Good night Princess xoxo "You make me happy when skies are gray."

Deleting programmes you don't use is one of the best ways to regain space on your hard drive. But simply dragging a programme folder into the Windows recycle bin won't get rid of hidden systems files or update settings. You should look for and use the uninstall applications that often come with larger software packages, or you can remove software using the 'Add/Remove Programmes' feature in the Control Panel. Consider deleting duplicate programmes, such as multiple Internet browsers (if you have both Netscape and Microsoft IE, choose one and delete the other). Unless you're a professional Website developer you only need one browser. Printer software is another area where you may have duplicate applications. If you still have the software that came with printers or other peripherals you're no longer using, by all means take it to the recycle bin. Lastly, many programmes bundle together all sorts of features that you probably aren't using. Microsoft Office is a classic example of a needlessly huge batch of applications. However, a useful feature is the ability to run a custom install, which lets you pick whether to install, say, bulky clip art or the thesaurus. So you can uninstall Office, then reinstall it and only add the parts of the programme you plan on using. And if you suddenly find yourself looking for another way to say 'thrifty', you can run the set-up programme to install only the thesaurus.
