How do I burn DVDs from my computer?

My computer will burn CDs, but not DVDs....more details....Please Help!!!?

  • My HP Pavilion zd7000 (purchased in September of 2004) has a DVD/CD-RW which will burn CDs, but will not burn DVDs. When I try to burn a new DVD, it says to insert a writable disc. It says there is no free space on the DVD, yet there are no files on it (because it's new). I cannot play a DVD, however, I have no problems with viewing files on CDs and listening to audio CDs. I think it has something to do with my not having a decoder thingy; I have tried to go through the steps on-line to download a DVD decoder, but I can't get anywhere. My brain is not "computer friendly," please write answers in language which can be understood by an idiot. Thanks!!!!

  • Answer:

It won't burn DVDs because it wasn't equipped with a DVD burner. (They were still uncommon back in 2004.) Your combo drive will read DVDs and CDs, but can only burn to CDs. Sorry for the bad news. You can probably upgrade it for about $100, if you want.

Your system is a cd writer and not a dvd writer, though able to read dvd.

Either your computer really doesn't have a DVD player/burner or the dvds that you're using is NOT the right ones...in the dvd burning world, there's TWO types of DVD discs that can be burn with TWO different types of DVD burner. The TWO types of DVD discs are "DVD+R" and "DVD-R". It happens to me once when I first got my computer. I couldn't burn any DVD at all so I ask a friend and he suggest I use "DVD+R" since I've been using "DVD-R" and my burner is not accepting it. If you're using one of these two types of dvd disc, try the other type, it might work. Also, if your computer really comes with a dvd player/burner, there should be a dvd software install in your computer already so when you put a dvd in, it will recognize it. If it is not recognizing your dvd, not playing, no dvd software inside your computer and your dvd is not working, mostly your computer doesn't come with a dvd burner...

If the drive is called a DVD/CD-RW it sounds like it is a DVD reader and a CD reader/writer. You need to have a drive that is called something like DVD+/-RW/R & CD-RW in order to burn both DVD's and CD's. Are you sure that you purchased a DVD burner with your computer? You should be able to play DVD's with the drive you described above, though...so maybe something is really messed up.

yoneo.

sounds like you are missing the dvd decoder "thingy" best suggestion I can give is go through your dvd collection until one of them tries to install intervideo. once intervideo installs you should be ok as far as playing DVDS however I would suggest buying Nero CD burning software to do the burning for you. also check the hp site to see for sure that your system is capable of burning DVDs

Sounds like you have not got the right software for your drive. Try loading Nero 7 or similar. PSSST you can get Nero 7 on Ebay at the moment for a few quid but look sharp before Ebay kicks it off.

try downloading Nero

Because your Cd-writer is not DVD-writer also. You have to buy a DVD-writer . Or maybe the soeed of compact DVD that yourm want to burn is not match with your DvD rom speed.
