How do I hook my laptop to my TV to watch movies and tv shows?

I downloaded a TV episode via bit torrent. it's in .avi format and plays fine on my laptop media player (windows media player). Now I want to watch it on my TV - what cables, etc do I need to hook up my laptop to my TV? Step-by-step instructions would be great! thank you dave
