Laptop transportation in a vehicle?
-
I drive on some very poorly maintained dirt roads. I am concerned about jolts and vibration damage to my Laptop. I have a nice soft sided Laptop suit case with what the manufacture says has a "Dome Protecting System." = dense rubber like foam. This to protect the display screen. My main concern is the hard drive since it is mechanically driven. Is orientation, laying down or vertical/ standing up critical? When the Laptop is off, is the hard drive disc clamped or supported to protect it? With all of the junk in my back seat, I transport it in the position it would be in if I was carrying it by the handle of the storage suitcase. Any suggestions, or am I worried over nothing? This my first computer ever.

Answer:
well, the platters inside the hard drive should be ok to take some shock, as long as there off. if you have the laptop on while your driving, then yes you can damage the hdd by repeated shaking. you should also try to fasten it to the seat so it doesn't go flying around into things, the seat cushion on most cars should be enough to cushion it. if you want a durable laptop, you may want to look into tough books, there very durable and can take a huge beating. so as long as the laptop is off while your driving, you should be fine. take a look at: http://www.buytough.com/?cpao=111&cpca=tbs&cpag=gk&kw=toughbook&gclid=CKWbkdC82poCFSQeDQod-zYC3g

Hi, If you laptop is switched off, you shouldn't worry about it. However, there is US base company which makes hard cover cases for military field laptops. It allows you to use the laptop even when you are driving on hard roads, it has some suspension system etc.. I just can't remember the darn name but it it is available commercially as well. I wanted to get one as well. I saw it in a book or magazine I was reading, I have to find it. I will let you know when I get hold of it.

As long as you're not pulling a "dukes of hazzard" jump you'll be fine. Is your laptop securely fastened in the suitcase? I recommend it should be and then I would put the suit case under the seat or maybe even strap it in with the seat belt.
