How do you get "tabs" back on your internet explorer page?

Problem with internet explorer?

  • My daughter downloaded Internet Explorer 8 (Beta). The laptop started being funny after that and she uninstalled it the same day. When she tried to get on to the internet 7 again she is having problems. All the tabs have gone and when she brings up the page it disappears after about five seconds with the message "internet explorer has encountered a problem and has to close" She took it to her husbands friend who works with pcs and he said that she has lost her internet options too. She can get online via msn explorer and tried to sort it by going on to microsoft help but could find nothing to help her. she cant understand why she has even lost the internet options as she went into "something" to find them and they had gone. He husbands friend says that she will have to completely take the laptop back to its factory settings with the cd, but she never got a cd with the pc. Has the I.Exp. 8 destroyed something as i have heard that it has ruined some pcs. Is there any other way to help or will she have to completely restore it She even restored the pc to three weeks before she downloaded the I.Exp 8 but that didn't help either. Grateful for any help for her. thanks

Hi Elsie, Experience has taught to stay well away from the beta versions; as Microsoft isn’t reliable at the best of times. It seems to have started from those with SP3. Quite often when trying to roll back to a previous version; it doesn’t work; as files end up corrupted and to make sure it was clean you would have to go into the registry and know what you were doing; or you could screw the operating system up altogether. I have stopped using IE and won’t do so until they have sorted their many and frequent problems out; plus it is very insecure. I’m surprised your daughter wasn’t provided with a back-up disk but it’s like most things these days, making more money out of people. They don’t make computers like they used to either but I will refrain from going into the PC ins and outs..:) Anyway while she is waiting for the patch; I would advice using Firefox. It’s quicker and safer and has some great add-ons. Your daughter can still access Microsoft and e-mail via her MSN but doesn’t need IE to search etc… Try it out and I’m sure you will get used to it and agree how much better it is..:) http://uk.downloads.yahoo.com/firefox/

I would remove Internet Explorer and install Firefox. Its just as easy to use as Internet Explorer but more reliable and more secure. Hope it helps. James

It probably did cause a problem which is why you shouldn't dl a beta. She'll have to reinstall 7 somehow.

go to www.microsoft.com/ie and download a full version of IE 7 and reinstall it.

dont bring the laptop back. EVER. its not your internet connection. its not the cd thing. try scanning for virus's because window's internet explorer sucks at not getting virus's so i'd say 40% that's whats wrong. Get a different browser such as google chrome, firefox (recommended) or safari. Never use internet explorer again. Trust me.

just download ie7 again, dont uninstall it, just download it again and finally restart your comp

I never use Explorer because it sucks, basically. Download a different browser such as Mozilla Firefox. It's much more awesome than IE x

maybe she has viruses on her laptop that are doing some thing i think it would be good to restore it but instead of using internet explorer but i suggest another browser http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/ its really faster and safer hope that helps

If you uninstalll internet explorer and try to use an older version again afterwards you can't you can't reinstall it because it will say "A newer or this version of internet explorer is already installed on this computer". You have to remove certain files from the ie directory as some sites direct to downgrade internet explorer or otherwise you end up with serious defects like tab errors and other crap. It is impossible that i've found to get it working again the only way is by reinstalling windows or using a restore point before the update was initiated.

Yeah, the Beta versions of certain things are still in development, hence the beta name. It could be that it has caused a problem with a driver or something. Has she tried downloading and installing Firefox? That's not a Microsoft product, so those problems might not occur on that. When she first bought her laptop, did she make a recovery disc? If so, get her to try running that. She'll lose everything she's done since then, but it will sort her problem.
