How to install the latest firmware on this iMac g3?

  • I recently received an iMac g3. The harddrive was dead, so I swapped it with a drive I had lying around. Unfortunately, the drive has the OSX 10.4 installer on it. I now have no video. Fortunately, the mac does have an external VXA port. I need to upgrade it's firmware, to install OSX. However, I don't have an OS9 cd, and I think the disk drive is a little broken, as it doesn't axcept the disks properly. Is there a way I can install OS9 from an OSX install partition on the harddrive? As I am a voiceover user, and don't need video to install OSX, can I installt he firmware from inside OSX? Any other way I can get the firmware on here without buying OS9? it's a slot-loading iMac g3, g3 600 MHZ, 256MB ram, 40GB IDE hdd. Thanks for any and all help!

    The firmware updater is an app -- an OS 9 app. You can't run an OS 9 app without OS 9. Further identification of your iMac: color: either Graphite (grey) or Snow (white). That means it is a "Summer 2001" model. The minimum OS is 9.2.1, so you will need a 9.2.1 or 9.2.2 install CD. Install OS 9.2.x, update firmware, install OS X. There is no alternate method.
