Why does my computer monitor turn on and off?

What should appear on the monitor when I turn the computer on?

  • Assume that I've successful built a working computer. Now, what should I see on the monitor when I first turn it on? (Please assume that I have everything that is needed installed and it's all working properly). I appreciate your input.

  • Answer:

Assuming you have all the hardware in and havent installed the operating system the computer will boot and tell you no operating system found. You can now load an operating system. It depends on what system you are using but windows 2000 or higher will format and install itself if you put the cd in and reboot. This is providing your bios boot sequence is set to boot from cd first. Try it first and see if it loads the cd and runs the windows setup. If it doesnt, you need to go into your bios and reconfigure your boot sequence. You can get to the bios by booting the computer and watching the screen. There will be a line that tells you to hit a certain key to get to the bios. Usually its the delete key. Once in the bios find the boot sequence area and set first boot to cdrom. Reboot the system with the windows cd in and you should be good to go.

What you want to see is the bios setup screen-sometimes you have to make it happen..check motherboard instructions.

The most common thing you'll first see is a splash-screen of the creator of the PC or the creator of the motherboard. However this doesn't always appear on all models of motherboards. The next thing that follows immediately is the BIOS running. It'll validate there's a keyboard and mouse present. It'll run a RAM check to make sure it's there. And it'll validate that there's a hardware device present of which it'll take commands from. Such as CD-ROM or Hard Drive. From there it'll load the information from that hardware device. If you have the BIOS taking commands from the hard drive first, then you should see Windows loading.

You should see the maker of the PC and the model and afterwards see Windows XP or Windows 98, etc.

If it is the first time to turn it on after building a computer it should show all the compontanst installed and then put you thru the operating system wizzard. You will know if you got it wrong. It will show the blue screen of death.
