Why is my serial usb cable not working?

USB repeater extension cable not working?

  • hey, i just bought a USB extension cable (16 ft) and whenever i plug it in I get a error in Windows 7 saying "USB Device not recognized". Here is the exact cable i bought: http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130436600863&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT It is a long cable, but like i said it has a booster so that shouldnt matter. I tried uninstalling it in Device manager and rebooting, but same problem i tried connecting various devices to the cable, same problem The funny thing is, i have a flash drive that lights up when connected, and when i plug it in the the cable the light goes on, but Win7 still won't recognize it? does anyone have any ideas? it's really frustrating me. thanks!

  • Answer:

Are you using it on a desktop or a laptop? USB devices need power to operate and long extension cables has substantial voltage loss as it gets longer. A laptop cannot provide sufficient voltage to the device hence the error.
