My computer won't turn on?

Graphics card overheated, computer wont turn on?

  • My 9800gt overheated quite often until I put a fan on it, but last night I forgot to turn the fan on and started gaming. Needless to say my computer black-screen crashed. (The computer itself doesn't turn off, I lose power to the monitor) normally I just shut the computer down and restart it. This time was different, it refuses to turn back on. I turned the fan on the computer and unplugged it from the power strip for 12 hours. I tried to turn it back on but it quickly turns itself back off. Before I go out and buy a new graphics card I want to make sure that its not something else, Also if it is the graphics card I plan on upgrading, will my 500 watt psu handle an Asus Geforce 460 gtx. Specs: (Don't know if you need them or not) 500w Thermallake powersupply 2.6 Intel quad core processor 9800 gt 6 Gigs ddr2 Not sure of the Mobo Extra info: No lights flashing anywhere on the computer, inside or out. Any and all help is much appreciated. :)

  • Answer:

Some thermaltake power supplies are better than others. One particular 500W version got a very poor review (pulling more than 375W from the unit triggered a shutdown). I'd opt for a new power supply of at least 550+W (which is typically where you can get 2x 6-pin power connectors needed for the GTX 460) from a reputable brand such as Corsair, Antec, OCZ, Seasonic, etc.
