Persistant Pestering Problem on my 2 PCs?
-
Basically- my PCs are running slow! 1 has XP Home, AMD Athlon 1.1GHZ, 256MB RAM and is running slow with its WIRED Sky Broadband connection- the antivirus/firewall is ZoneAlarm Firewall and AVG Free- it shouldn't be this slow because of them should it? I thought I met XP minimum requirements?! The other is XP Home, 256 MB RAM and Pentium III ;p It has NO antivirus/firewall as it is running SLOWER than PC 1 The main problem with this PC is that it has a wireless card (802.11)/Office 2007 and on 'command' 'router-t' it shows a connection BUT the connection drops out and doesn't load pages on MSN/Firefox/IE6 browser. Not to mention the wireless router is NEXT DOOR (can't do a wired connection as this has no Ethernet port/ don't want a wire running around the hallway) I know the obvious answers may be "More RAM" or "Get a new PC" BUT I am waiting to buy a new PC that meets specs for Windows 7 and I shouldn't have to buy more RAM BTW-tried defragment-no great performance boost

I am sorry, you don't want to hear this answer but you need more RAM. If you meet the minimum requirements, you will get the minimum performance, what did you expect? Both processors are old and slow, but if you had more ram you would see a dynamic improvement.

Download CCleaner? I was sceptical of it, but has made noticeable difference.

I wouldn't wait for Windows 7!! What makes you think windows 7 (if its ever released) will be any better than XP or Vista?

Two anti virus programs will slow it down
YOU NEED MORE RAM 256MB is not nearly enough to run XP. It should be slow.. Your network wouldn't slow your computer down to much if at all.. I suggest 1GB. 512MB should be fine though.. You need to get more RAM to get speed.

I'm running my internet rig on 700Mhz pentium 111. I have a seperate hard drive for the job,but i am in the fortunate position of having the XP disc. It works fine for me, but I found if I tried to use the rig for everything else as well,it slowed down to the speed of doom.

AVG anti virus is quite effective but it can really slow down your PC (at least it did mine). I have now changed to Avast anti virus (free) and things are much quicker. Also I would agree with installing Ccleaner.

first get more ram 1gig or more will help the most of all run a system clean up click start then click run then type msconfig take out what you do not need in the start up tab. Restart your computer. After that run the defrag that will make it run a whole lot faster!!!!

If you are making an internet connection on a pc with no antivirus or firewall you will have viruses/spyware in a matter of seconds. I dealt with 2 pcs last week that picked up a virus just by going on the internet to windows update after reinstalling. Not only is your slower pc probably riddled with viruses/malware its comprimising your other pc by being on the same network. AVG and zonealarm will not stop and sometimes not even detect the deviant types of viruses/malware that are around at the moment. Id suggest running trendmicros housecall online scan http://housecall.trendmicro.com/uk/ and downloading malwarebytes (the free edition will do) and running it on both pcs http://www.malwarebytes.org/ And yes, more ram is a good idea too :)
