How to stream videos from PC to PS3?

Why doesn't streaming video look as good when I connect my HDTV to a PC using VGA compared to my Macbook & PS3?

  • When I stream videos on my TV using my macbook via micro dvi and PS3 via HDMI it looks so much crisper and the colors look more deep. The PC I am using is a very cheap model I bought a few years back. It probably has a very bad graphics card, but I've been googling and found that good graphics card are more for gaming and cheap ones can display Netflix and such fine. I've also read that VGA is comparable to DVI. I am stumped. I was thinking about getting a new graphics card with DVI and HDMI hoping that's the answer but I'm not too sure.

    VGA is the lowest quality video that has been available for several years. HDMI is one of the highest quality. The graphics on your motherboard are probably very low quality. Your very cheap PC cost a very small fraction of the price of the Macbook. The same for comparing it to the PS3 when you allow for different functionality and capacity. It is no wonder the graphics capability is lower on the PC. It is not just the VGA cable, it is every part in the chain of parts. What you read about graphics cards is incorrect. You have discovered that a poor graphics card limits more than games. If you want better quality, you will need a good graphics card using HDMI. Even then, a cheap computer has lots of cheap parts so it might not be enough to just upgrade that card.

VGA is an old type of cable and many are made cheaply at the expense of quality, This is unnoticeable on a small computer monitor but it shows up on Large TVs. Micro DVI's are usually much higher quality. Try another cable or HDMI.
