But i have heard that if you get rid of 98 without having another operating system working you might render your computer unable to work.

  • Answer:

Put in your Windows XP disc Boot your computer Run the CD before Windows 98 starts After copying installation files, you will be prompted to format your computer. Do so and your Windows 98 is gone. Then proceed to install Windows XP.

just put in xp and follow the instructions. it will upgradae everything on it's own. But, you might want to make sure your ancient computer can actually run xp

no it wont, you will just loose everything is you dont back everything up Anything you have on Windows 98 please backup such as important or wanted items such as music, videos and pictures Also, to install XP you will need the following > A XP installation disk any version > The System Requirments (Please check microsoft that your system is capable of running Windows XP) > http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314865 > All you do after you backup and exsure your pc is indeed powerful enough al you do is reformat your disk and restart > Your BIOS will be impying "No important system found" so just pop the CD and it will continie to the setup > the rest should be easy

You'll have to pay for XP. If your computer came with 98 I wouldn't recommend it anyway because it will slow it down. Consider upgrading/dualbooting* to Xubuntu You can check it on a live cd first, the live cd will run slower than the actuall installation. But if you don't like it you could also try Crunchbanglinux which is even smaller. You can do all this without damaging 98 if you prefer, not until you decide you love linux and want to ditch windows anyway. *have 98 and another operating system on one computer The nice thing about a dual boot is that you can usually access your files through the new OS. .exe programs will usually need to be run in 98 though, although a lot of them can be used through Linux using a program called WINE

no. it will run. but first you need to get all the drivers for your hardware. some of your hardware might not function correctly or not function at all if you don't have it.
