Hypothetical question about motherboard and CPU?

Computer Motherboard/CPU question. Please Help!!!?

  • Ok I built a computer for a friend about a year ago. The other day he ad to rearrange his office furniture and to make a long story short he plugged the power cord into the power supply when the power supply switch was on and it blew the motherboard. So I ordered a new motherboard (it has the LGA 775 socket.) It is very similar to the old one. It is a Foxxconn G31MXP-K LGA 775 Intel G31 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard. So I put everything back together and nothing happened. So I figured that the power supply was probably bad. I replaced the power supply and now I have the power light on, on the front, the CPU fan is spinning and the case fan is also spinning, but still a black screen. I have tried re-seating the processor and heat sink but still same thing. Does anyone know what this could be? I know I have everything hooked up correctly I have assembled and disassembled it 3 or 4 times just to make sure. Could this be the Processor? Please Help. Thanks

Do you have the case speaker hooked up? It's not making any beeps, when you try to start it up? No beep codes suggests either no RAM, or no CPU. It would be pretty unusual for a CPU to get damaged by a power surge. (They're protected by an additional layer of voltage regulators.) RAM is more sensitive. Did you test the RAM --try different RAM in that computer, or try that RAM in a different computer? I probably would have tested the computer with a different power supply first, before anything else. And I definitely would have tested the RAM, before replacing the motherboard. You could have more than one thing burned out, which makes it harder to troubleshoot. How do you know it's not the replacement power supply which is DOA? Can you try that power supply on a different computer, prove it works?

Im not going to do a technical answer but because you remounted the cpu and heat sink, did you have any form of earth strapped to you? If not then you may have fried a few crucial components with your static. Its also possible that if you have a graphics card and you connect your monitor up to that then the BIOS may not have automatically set the default screen output as the G-Card. Try using onboard video and see if you get a picture.

From your question it seems that nothing worked until you replaced the power supply. So perhaps the psu was blown. How are you certain that the mobo was blown? My computer put out a few explosions last month. Astoundingly everything was fine except the new speakers. Try the monitor on a known working computer. You have certainly gone to a lot of trouble to effect repairs, you must nearly be there. If possible test the ram also in a known (compatible) working computer.
