Why aren't any programs opening on my computer?

I am running windows xp. How can I stop programs from opening when I turn on my computer.?

  • When ever I turn on my computer, I am waiting a long time because all of my program are coming on. How can I stop this from happening. They are on my the computer as soon as it is turned on.

  • Answer:

Use msconfig as mentioned above, but make sure you know what it is you're disabling. Some of that stuff may be required for your hardware or for some programs to work. You can use Google to try and figure out what stuff you don't recognize is.

First, you make sure your "Start->Programs->Startup" menu is empty. Then you go in Start->Run, type in MSCONFIG, press enter. Click on the startup tab, then remove the checkmark to the applications you don't want to load on startup. Restart your computer, and you should be done. If you want to re-enable a program, you can still go back and re-enable it. Just be sure not to fool around too much in MSCONFIG on the other tabs, as there are critical settings in there, but on the Startup tab there is nothing that can break your computer.

Security Task Manager is another program that lets you turn off or 'quarantine' start up items. It also can tell you which processes you are running might pose threats to you.
