Problems with dvd playback and video?

I have a vista pc running home basic it has 1GB of ram and uses a NVIDIA Geforce 6100 nforce 420 video card..i am having problems with video and dvd playback..sound is truoble free but when playing films and video the display pauses every few seconds ..tries to correct itself and then pauses again..the dvds i am using have no scratches..what could be the cause of the problem and what is a possible fix...the video card in imcoparated on the motherboard and is not in a PCI slot..any serious answers would be great

not sure .. it could be low ram ... but it could be some type of drive speed control software running or even the drive itself .. i would try ripping the dvds to harddrive and see if that fixes it then go from there ..

I'm afraid the on-board gfx chip you have is really too old and slow for Vista, especially if you are trying to do something as gfx intensive as video playback. On board graphics are always a compromise, as they use system resource where a plug-in card will have its own ram. The fact that the sound is OK seems to confirm this. I have found that 1gb of ram is the minimum which Vista is happy running on, and for most applications I would recommend 2gb. In your case the problem is that the on-board gfx actually take up some of your ram even before you do anything. Depending on how old the motherboard is this could range from 16-32mb up to 128mb of ram. This is in addition to the heavy demand Vista itself makes of ram, and then on top of that is the software you have running in the background, and your DVD player of course!
