My computer doesn’t turn on, computer specialist tells me I need a new motherboard, I need help?
-
I first want to point out that I am not a beginner, but I have quite a bit of knowledge in the computer world, however with this issue I am lost. It happened one day that my cpu started making a strange scratching sound, and after that freezed up and I couldn’t switch it of in any way, so I had to switch of the backup(ups). The next day it worked okay again after I opened it up and cleaned it a bit, and then again after a week the same noise and then it switched of and from then on never switched on again. When I try switching it on it doesn’t respond in any way, so I presumed the power supply broke, and brought it to a computer shop for fixing. There, after a long time checking they told me that the motherboard had already burned two of their power supplies they had replaced and they thought the motherboard had a short circuit, and must be replaced. What should I do in this case, should I really change the motherboard, what is a short circuit, and can that destroy the power supply? Help

Answer:
That actually might be your motherboard. Your power supply just puts out however much power it needs to, as defined by your BIOS in your motherboard. This might be caused by your motherboard trying to give too much power to certain components and trying to draw too much from the power supply, and burning it out. There might be something wrong with your hard drive, as I will explain later. So there might be something wrong with your hard drive and it asks the motherboard for more power from the power supply, and the motherboard redirects power and that might cause it to burn out. So it seems that you might need to get a new motherboard... If this actually is the problem, it might fry some of the components connected to it, and that would just be more costly. Also, you mentioned that your CPU made a scratching noise...? I don't think that is possible, your processor doesn't make any noise at all. That scratching might be your hard drive (I have had hard drives make a horrible scratching noise and eventually just stop working) and that might be something you need to look into fixing before you lose any files. A short circuit is when charge flows along a different path that intended. An example would be to connect the positive and negative terminals of a battery together with a low-resistance conductor, like a wire. With low resistance in the connection, a high current flows, causing the cell to deliver a large amount of energy in a short time. In electrical devices, like your motherboard, unintentional short circuits are usually caused when a wire's insulation breaks down, or when another conducting material is introduced, allowing charge to flow along a different path than the one intended. I hope this helps! P.S. A new motherboard is NOT 3-5 hundred, that's incorrect. Prices range from 50 and up. A site called Newegg is incredibly reliable. I suggest checking it out for motherboards. http://www.newegg.com. Also, the support is great!! I always end up there for computer parts.

I'm not a computer expert too but months ago, my computer broke down too. While I was using my computer, it suddenly shut down by itself. I brought it to my cousin who's also a computer specialist and assumed that either it's the poswer supply, the memory cards, or the mother board. In the end, she concluded it's the memory cards but things got complicated so we just decided to build a new cpu. She said my cpu was hopeless and even if I bring it to computer repair shops, it'll be worthless. But your specialist's reason seems to be reasonable, and it could be the motherboard. When I was in a certain computer shop I heard motherboards are one of the major problems of their customers. If you're really unsure, try to get a second, or even a third opinion from other computer repair shops.

Well, I've never heard of such a thing. Probably time to get a new computer.

short circuit happens when too much power rushes through burning most everything. and yes it could destroy the power supply. i suggest smelling the part near the power supply, if it smells burnt you have a problem.
