Looking to buy muscle RAM for my PC?
-
Here are the specs of my new PC: AMD Athlon II X2 220 Dual-Core Processor 3 GB Memory (DDR3) 1 TB Hard Drive 64-bit Windows 7 Integrated NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 I know it doesn't sound much, but it's just what I need. All I need are just more RAM. Now, I disassembled the PC and I was shocked to find that it was completely bottlenecked with all the stuff in it. It looks like there are only two slots to insert the DDR3 RAM and I think only one black slot for only DDR2 to insert in it. Now, I don't plan to use the DDR2 at all. I am looking to buy cheap, high DDR3 RAM to put in it for high performance. Does anyone know exactly which DDR3 brand I can get for this computer? Or it doesn't matter as long as it says DDR3? Also, where can I find the cheapest ones? If I get "muscle" RAM, meaning like 8 GB, 12 GB, etc, will I need power supply or is that only for the video card? (I don't need a new video card, though.) I'm looking to upgrade only performance for gaming. Oblivion runs beautifully on high settings on this PC with tons of mods, but not Skyrim. Skyrim is a bit too much for my PC anyway. Don't tell me to get Skyrim, I already have it on the PS3 and that's good enough. What I'm looking is to maximize Oblivion even further with upgraded mods to make it even more gorgeous and that's why I am asking about more RAM to increase even more performance. I will give +10 points and +10% EXP to anyone who will give detailed, mature answers. Thanks!

Answer:
You need to understand that RAM is mostly a commodity, it really doesn't vary much in quality at stock speeds, and if you have a store bought computer, then you're going to be running at stock speeds anyway. Also keep in mind that Oblivion is a 32-bit program. The most RAM it will ever use is around 2.5 GB. I'd just stick two 4 GB sticks of whatever you can get cheapest from a reputable brand like Corsair, Kingston, G.Skill ,etc. Make sure your mobo supports 4 GB sticks first though. Newegg.com is the place to get cheap RAM There's a point of diminishing returns with RAM as well, you might see a noticeable improvement going from 3 GB to 4GB, but you'll see progressively less and less improvement as amount of RAM increases. So if you went from 4 GB to 8GB you likely wouldn't see a great deal of improvement and if you went from 8 GB to 12GB (which I don't think you can) there would no difference to speak of in normal use. I would also strongly consider a discrete video card, even a $50 Radeon 55700 would be roughly 12 times more powerful than your current integrated solution. A discrete card also has it's own onboard memory, where as your integrated IGP has to use system RAM as VRAM. Which slows things down a bit as well. One more thing to remember, If your video card or IGP in your case has a slow GPU, and yours does, then increasing the RAM won't do much good as the GPU is the bottleneck, not the amount of RAM you have. Realistically a 6150 SE will struggle to use more than 512 MB of memory, as the GPU is simply too slow to use more than that effectively. I'm surprised that you're getting acceptable performance out of the 6150SE, you must be running at low resolution like 1024x768 or 1024x1024.
