Whats the average temperature for a graphics card when idle?

Whats a safe and healthy temperature for a Graphics Card?

  • I have a Nvidia Geforce GTX 560 Ti and while playing Battlefield 3 at High settings, It reaches around 50 - 60 degrees Celcius. Is this a safe temperature? Also, The GPU built-in fan spins at around 4500 - 5000 rpm while at this temp, Is this a normal speed or should I be concerned? Also again, If you have any tips on keeping my PC cool, anything would be appreciated. Thanks!

Your 50-60 C while playing BF3 is fine, don't worry, I have a GTX 560 and while playing BF3 it reaches 72 C. Higher cards today are specifically designed to work at higher temperatures. The GTX 560 ti can work or operate normally up to 99 C. But for me, the safest would be below 80 C, even though the card can work beyond that, it is much better if it is below 80 C. The only thing that you could do to keep your temps low is by adding case fans if still possible, and try getting a good case fan with high AIRFLOW (CFM) with the appropriate and acceptable noise level One good brand of case fan is SILVERSTONE, its AIRFLOW (CFM) is usually above 100 and its noise level is not that high. So, if you're case fans are those that came with the case itself then most probably they do not have good airflow, you could test them by placing a paper on the vent to see if the sucking power (side and front) is strong enough that the paper would stick to the casing. If not, replace your old fan with silverstone brand.

60c is fine, i have the same card, it's a beast! run BF3 on ultra if you want and it'll do little to the temperatures or framerate. the safe temperature for them is anything up to 100c but that doesnt mean you should overclock it so it does reach 100c because you want it to last dont you?

Temperatures that could kill a CPU are pretty normal for a video card. The 60 degrees are pretty good for the card and the fan speed

you should worry when the card goes over 60 celcius....my radeon 4670 consumes ~100w but at high performace gaming the temp is almost 50-55

Depends on video card. Generally speaking they all follow what I wrote below below, this is of course when you are gaming. -When you hit the high 80's is when you should be concern because it not normal for any video card, regardless of the expensive or great it is. -When you hit 90's is when there is definitely something wrong either, your video card, or the PC case it is in, possibly lack of airflow. -When your video card hit 105 it will start to throttle. -By the time any video cards reach 110 it will shutdown, if the fan/water-cooled system is broken on the video card, it doesn't take much time to reach this and will cause permanent damage to the point where it won't work anymore. If your video card reaches high 80's just idling, not doing anything, not in a game or program than there is something wrong. For your GTX 560 Ti the temperature you described is completely normal, nothing to worry about. You should have stated which company made your GTX 560 Ti, e.g. EVGA, MSI, ASUS etc. because if you are worried there are programs free to install (some like EVGA only work for their video cards) where you can manually control the speed of the fan, so you can overclock the specifications a bit. Basically better for gaming, but not a big deal. There are also third part programs that will also gives you access to the fan speed of any video card. There are several aftermarket parts to increase airflow in a PC, too many to name, these are usually for the enthusiasts who have the budget to continuously buy new parts and upgrade ever so many months, Majority of the time its not needed, and a simple program to increase fan speed with do wonders. As for your situation, again nothing to worry about, or even be concern let alone waste money on unneeded parts (unless you take pictures and want to show it off on forums out there). If you really are concern a quick search on third party programs to control the fan will more than be sufficient. Hope this helps, good luck.
