Building game PC for the first time, is this a good install order?
-
I've watched a few guides on Youtube. Many people have their own order of which components they install first. I was wondering if this is a good install order: 1. Install CPU onto motherboard, connect the CPU power to motherboard 2. Apply thermal paste to CPU 3. Install CPU Cooler, connect cooler power to motherboard 4. Install RAM 5. Install Power Supply into the case 6. Install Hard Drive / SSD / DVD drives into the case 7. Test system outside of the case to make sure everything's working 8. Organize Cables 9. Install gold motherboard stands and motherboard 10. Connect all power / data cords, Organize cables some more 11. Lastly, install graphics card. In all video guides I've watched, people install the Video Card right after they install the motherboard, and then connect all the cables at once. But I figured it might be good to install the video card last, since its huge, and it gets in the way of organizing cables and connecting things onto the motherboard. Also, I understand when I turn on my PC for the first time, it will take me to the motherboard BIOS setup. If I don't plan on customizing anything - should I just not do anything, and pop in the Windows DVD? Thanks.

Answer:
Here's how I do it: 1. Install CPU + heatsink. 2. Install RAM. 3. Install video card. 4. Put main PSU connectors onto motherboard / components. 5. Short the motherboard to see if it posts / all your main parts are working (out of case, on mobo box). 6. Take off connectors / GPU. 7. Screw in PSU, Optical Drive, HDD. 8. Take mobo + heatsink + RAM and screw into case. 9. Install GPU. 10. Route all cables properly / do the cable management. "But I figured it might be good to install the video card last..." >It depends on what kind of case you have. I prefer installing it before. It doesn't interfere with cable management for me because my cables are routed behind the motherboard tray. It's also a good idea to have it in there so you know it's at in relation to cables. "If I don't plan on customizing anything - should I just not do anything, and pop in the Windows DVD?" >Yes.

There's no real magic formula that builders should follow when it comes to putting a system together. Really, as long as everything gets done, then you can do it however you please. Do whatever is comfortable for you. That's the best way to go about it. You'll need to set the date and time in BIOS, but other than that nothing really needs to be changed. Do check your standard features to make sure everything is installed and detected. You could also change the boot priority to your optical drive in slot 1, then install windows. That will stop your system trying to read off of a blank hard drive and showing a HDD error.
