How do I get past the computer lock?

How do i get my computer to lock itself after it sits idle for a while?

  • When I first got my computer it would automatically log me off and lock the computer after a certain amount of time, it doesn't do that on its own anymore. Now I have to assign a screen saver when I didn't have to before. I can't find anything in Power Settings to help me. I don't want to put it in standby or hibernate because it takes longer to get back to the screen. I've looked around the other posts and found something called Logoff Screen Saver but I don't have that in my drop box. I'm using Windows XP. Can you help me?

  • Answer:

I use the most simplest way - right click on your desktop/Properties/Screen saver/password protection. Nothing more :)

I would start close to where you are right now w/ the screen saver but only make a few changes. You need to have the screen saver, but change the power settings. Make sure the screen saver requires logon after restore, but in the power settings, you need to change the times for standby and hibernate. It sounds like they are too close to your screen saver delay, and you go into standby before you get back... Just make them 1 or 2 hours or whatever you think wold be a good time that you would make it back by. This should work fine

I set up my laptop to go to a black screen after being idle six minutes. Screen savers use lots of memory, at least thats what I was told by the IT people at the office. Go to start, my computer, performance. I have point and identify, one click select, so whem my pointer travels over an action icon I get a message blurb telling me what I can do before I enter that page, its not the default setting. If your not at work take the time to explore your options. If you are at work, consult with your IT people about the screen saver issue.
