How do I boot my computer from a disc?

What do I do if my computer asks for a boot disc?

  • My computer had Windows XP last time I saw it. My mom said the computer had so many viruses it just wouldn't start. I started it up, and it went to dos mode, and said enter boot disc in drive A:/ i'm pretty sure. Is there something I can do on this computer to get the other computer working? Could I use a flash drive?

  • Answer:

If your computer is that messed up that it enters into Dos put your master disk in and reformat. Thats what I would do if you dont mind losing all of your personal things on the hard drive. At least this way you know you are getting a clean slate and will not have to worry about anything like that happening in the near future.

Not really 100% sure what you're asking... If it is giving you an error to insert a bootable disk there is probably a non-bootable diskette, or CD in a drive, simply take it out... If windows is corrupt and won't boot, you can wait until it says starting windows then press F8 and select "Boot in Safe Mode". If you need to re-install windows - enter BIOS and select the CD-ROM as your 1st boot disk by changing the boot order. Then insert your Windows CD and it will automatically prompt you to re-format your hard drive if you'd like, and then install a fresh copy of windows on your hard drive.

Start it up and try to enter safemode. Put avg free and spybot search and destroy on you jumpdrive. Install them onto the computer and update them. After that run the programs and delete all of the virus's and spyware it can. That is about all you can do besides a full format and reinstall Windows.

Take out the floppy disk and any cd you've got in there and try again. A favourite for that problem is leaving a non-system floppy in the drive and it errors with A: netldr not found or similar.

OK lets start with do you have a xp cd? next CAn you check the BIOS setting? What does it have for the boot sequence? Next if worse come to worse you could always take the HDD from the non-operating system put it into the good one and run a virus check. If there are no detected viruses. Use XP recovery.

connect the hard drive to another computer with up-to-date anti-virus software installed. if recognized, perform full scan. then backup all necessary data and do a clean OS install (with formatting). if the hdd is nor recognized by the other machine, it most probably means that the disc is fried. carry it to a repair shop - maybe the guys will at least be able to extract data from it.

You could boot it with the XP installation disk. However, if this computer is as messed up as you say - just wipe it out and start over again. Instructions for reinstallation of XP are here: http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp

What it was asking for was a start-up floppy disk that is usually made in Windows XP. You mentioned "other computer." If you have another computer with the same operating system, you can create a start-up disk from the second machine that MIGHT allow you to boot into the sick machine. To create an MS-DOS startup disk The MS-DOS startup disk you create will allow you to boot into MS-DOS. Insert a floppy disk into your computer's floppy drive. Open My Computer, and then click the floppy disk drive to select it. On the File menu, point to the name of the floppy drive, and then click Format. Under Format options, click Create an MS-DOS startup disk. Click Start. Important Creating an MS-DOS startup disk erases all information on the floppy disk. Notes To open My Computer, double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop. The MS-DOS startup disk only allows the system to boot into an MS-DOS prompt. The disk contains no additional tools.

all u need to do is put a file named ntldr into a disk and start the computer or copy the ntldr into the C drive on your hard disk. u can copy this file from XP cd if u have it or from any XP computer. if u dont have a disk but u have the XP Cd then start from XP cd and then on the first screen that shows up choose the cosole option ( the middle option as i dont remember exactly what it says) any way when u get into the black dos screen enter the cd and then go to the folder I386 and copy the ntldr into the drive C good luck
