How to ensure XP gets installed in partition D only ?
-
In partition C,I have ME. In partition D,I had XP which is not booting due to file error. Now,when I run setup (from the back-up) of XP in partition E, the setup does start, but I do not know if it is reinstalling the D drive XP again,OR is it over writing the ME of partition C, as I have the PC booted from ME only. How can I ensure this? Also, before installing, I am asked of only 2 options, "New installation or Upgrade". Which one should I choose, as it never asks me as to "in which partition do I wish to Install" the XP. Thus I cannot direct the setup to run in drive D and fear that it may not wipe out my ME as the PC is booted from it only. I dont want to format D, just run a setup. When I choose a second option, to install from a bootable CD,it compulsarilly asks me to format D,which I wish to avoid. When I go to repair option,it goes in DOS mode system of repair and not an automatic repair? Is my CD version wrong,as it does NOT support an automatic repair, but goes to DOS

Answer:
Sometimes 'though not all the time' drive D is used for recovery, and so it doesnt always works if you try to upgrade ur pc and load a new OS on it. You will need to back up all your files on a removeable disk, then delete the ME OS and install teh XP OS. \That is teh only way I know of how to solve the problem

first, install me in C: second, install xp in D: when you install xp, you'll need to make some decisions. never install operating system from hard drive, only from bootable cd. if me works fine but xp doesn't then follow the steps: - open the comp with me; - delete from D: folders: program files, documents and settings, windows, and all files you don't use. - open comp booting from bootable xp cd - xp will ask ypu to repair, don't; - if xp ask you to upgrade, don't, try choosing install in another partiton; - xp will ask you the partition, choose D: - xp will ask you about formatting: choose leave file system intact. i don't know all steps right now, but if you need more information, mail me. i'll try to help you. i forgot something. when you choose repair, you'll go to dos, because this button - repair - is for repairing from dos. don't go, just keep continue.

If you want to install it in D, then first make sure you have enough space in it. About 2GB

While time of installing operating system select the d drive. continue to install. After installation while rebooting partiucular operating system will be highlighted it's means you have correctly installed. Otherwise u can log into Run in Start type boot.ini A list of partition will be listed with loaded operating system, if no operating system is listed than it is not installed. OR u can goto run type cmd in cmd type ver in front of D:

first start with ME, take a backup of ur d drive ; now ensure u wanna to install xp or not, ( mean wanna 2 close error during starting ) , if not then start with ME , and follow : My computer / properties/advanced/ startup and recovery/ and in system startup ( edit) : remove/delete windows xp operating system details) if yes : then insert bootable cd, during formating , chose leave my sys as it is, and follow all needs of xp hope ur ploblem is resolved

You should choose as new installation and then it will copy few files and then your system will restart. Let it be booting from your cd. Then it will search if any OS is already installed on your computer. It will then ask if you want to install your XP in drive C or in other drive. This is the point where you should choose drive as D. Or you can go to Boot device page and select first boot device as your CD ROM
