I can't restore my computer back to an earlier date!! ive tried many times, and it wont work! HELP?
-
My computer is infected with spyware. I do not know how the spyware came through. A friend advised me to set my computer back to an earlier date using system restore. For some reason, it cannot restore my computer back to the earlier date. I have tried over and over again, and yet the same message comes up saying how it cannot be restored. Please help me, I have important documents saved on this computer. Oh, and I'm on administrator, because my regular user will always shut down when i get on that specific user.

Answer:
It's possible that system restore points are not available. Or that they are corrupt. I suggest you back up all your data before attempting anything major on your sytem. Spyware usually does not interfere with your documents, only with your programs. Install SpyBot http://www.safer-networking.org/ or other antispyware, and do a complete scan for bad intruders. Scan computers online, no need to install antivirus, as long as Internet Explorer works well: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ Try to install free AVG antivirus http://free.grisoft.com/ If you need to load the Last Know Good configuration of Windows see www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000626.htm If you need to RECOVER data, see my answere here http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AlfLgPSHvAvbX.6hCRr3bRjty6IX?qid=20070527125629AAZwpfw&show=7#profile-info-hh0SiGHIaa Good luck! .

I would suggest finding a spyware killer on the internet but be careful because some spyware programs that are advertised that are not known usually have spyware in them so find a good one. Also if you have a windows CD try repairing your computer with it or that all depends on your type of windows though. I suggest backing up important data to a CD just in case things get ugly.

Try booting into Safe Mode and doing the System Restore from there. Save your documents to CD or flash drive/external hard drive, so if you do end up reformatting your computer your documents will be safe (put antivirus and antispyware software on it after reinstalling Windows and scan your documents in case any are infected. Download the following five programs: 1) CCleaner <www.ccleaner.com> does an excellent job cleaning up temporary internet files, cookies, temp files, recycle bin, and prefetch folder. 2) If you don't have an antivirus program, EITHER AVG <free.grisoft.com> and Avast <avast4home.com> -- only install ONE. 3) Hitman Pro <www.hitmanpro.com> will let you automatically install, update, and run in Safe Mode many of the best free and free-to-try antispyware programs all with one click, including Spybot Search & Destroy, Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE, SpywareBlaster, Ewido, and free trials of Webroot Spysweeper and PCTools SpywareDoctor. The free version of Spybot Search & Destroy allows autoupdates, but Hitman Pro helps in keeping the others up to date with one click. 4) Winsockfix <>http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4372.html> which is used to fix your internet connectivity if cleaning up malware breaks your internet connection. 5) Hijackthis <www.merijn.org> which catalogs the places programs (both legitimate and malicious) are usually found, so that an expert can tell you if there's anything nasty remaining. First, run CCleaner to clean out temporary files. In the Advanced section only check off "Old Prefetch data". Then click on Issues and scan for issues. Have it fix them all and make backups in case something gets erased that shouldn't (although I've never had problems with CCleaner's issue fixes). Then Scan for issues again until you get "No issues found". Then click on Tools and uninstall programs you don't want, and while in Tools click on Startup to remove things you don't want starting automatically. If you're unsure what you need to keep you can google for advice or email me with your questions. Then update your antivirus program and then reboot into Safe Mode to run a full scan, then reboot after cleaning up what it found. Then run Hitman Pro with the Safe Mode box checked. Reboot after cleaning up what it found. Now run Hijackthis with the "Scan and Save Logfile" button, and email me the hijackthis.log, and I can advise you if there's any malware still there. If your internet connection isn't working after removing malware, run Winsockfix. When you're all done and know everything is working, you can disable System Restore, reboot, and then re-enable it. I also periodically run a rootkit detector; AVG, Sophos, and F-Secure all have free ones.

Do you have any anti spyware software? The best one hat I have used is Counterspy. It can be downloaded from http://download.com You have 10 days to use it as it is a trial. I think this will help a multitude of problems on your computer.

you need a spy ware remover, also go into your add and remove programs and remove a [program that you recently installed, you need a good firewall and a virus remover like Norton's.

Reboot and keep pressing F8 untill you get the option to start in safe mode scan with anti virus, spyware and malware scanners.remove any bugs you find. then creat a new restore point. If you are using Nortons read attached page re system restore http://bertk.mvps.org/html/symantec_doc_1.html Flakes

Well could tell us what the error message is? And if its infested it might be the spyware blocking it. Try downloading some free anti-spyware programs like Ad-Aware, Spybot: Search and Destroy, go to www.download.com for others. Run them in Safe mode. See if you can after doing all that. Another possibility is that you might have System Restore off. To check that, Right Click My Computer and go to properties, then System restore.
