How to transfer installed programs from old computer to new?

Computer imaging/transfer question?

  • So i have this old desktop computer running windows xp sp3, with a bunch of movies and installed programs on (with saved data). Is there a way to copy all the data (the installed games and programs, movies, music) and transfer it to a new computer running windows 7? The programs are actually -installed- but I think I lost a couple of the discs so I can't exactly reinstall the programs on the new computer... And the problem is that it would be transferring between different operating systems. But if its possible, please tell me how!

  • Answer:

Yes....and no. It depends. You can copy all of your movies and music safely through a pen drive or any other means of external storage. As for programs, you can do it but you need to place the program in its proper location. For eg: Photoshop stored in C:/Program files/Adobe. So you need to place it here to make it work 100%. As far as games are concerned, they will work if the OS supports them, If you want your saved games to carry over, Copy the concerned game's folder off My documents in Windows XP and place it in My documents in windows 7. If it was placed in My documents/My games/<Insertgamename>; Then you need to place it exactly there in windows 7. ~The Grandmaster
