What does secuRom do to your computer?

OK well i just baught the Sims 2 apartment life and i dont know if it has it. I was just reading about it when i found out about it. im afraid to open it since i read about SecuROM on it and it messes ur computer? So can you give me info on what it does because im gonna get sims 3 and dont want to mess my computer up. And i have a Ati radean xpress200 graphics card.
